2008 Ph.D. Degree Scholarship Programs in Science Subjects

 

Programs Introduction:

Students are required to complete the curriculum between 4-6 years (no longer than 8 years), fulfill the designated number of credits, conduct research, complete the doctoral thesis (in Chinese or English, if in English the Chinese abstract is required) and defend it in front of a panel of experts. Successful graduates will receive a graduation certificate with the doctoral degree, according to the regulation of the Degree Committee.

Note that there are only full-time courses offered for international students currently.

Application Prerequisites:

Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport, under the age of 45, have attained a Bachelor’s degree or above.

Application Materials:

1. Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship with a photograph fixed, which is available at www.oir.pku.edu.cn or www.csc.edu.cn

2. A personal statement including the research proposal of 1500 words (in Chinese or English). The format of the personal statement can be found at http://www.oir.pku.edu.cn

3. Graduation certificate and degree diploma (Students expecting to graduate should provide an official letter stating expected graduation date), must be original documents or certified copies either in Chinese or English

4. Official transcripts of your academic achievement up to the present, including courses taken and standard achieved, must be original documents or certified copies either in Chinese or English

5. Two recommendation letters from your referees. The referees should be professors or persons with relevant academic title. At least one of them should have knowledge of your recent academic work. The recommendation letter must be original documents either in Chinese or English. The format of the reference letters can be found at http://www.oir.pku.edu.cn

6. Copies of your Chinese (or English) language proficiency test results:

n        For first degree attained applicants: HSK level 6 or above is required

n        For Master’s degree (or above) attained applicants (non-native English speakers only): TOEFL 600 or above/GRE 2000 or above is required

7. Table of contents and abstracts of your academic publications and any other original achievement in your field

8. One photocopy of your valid passport (passport type must be ordinary)

9. Other materials required by the specific school or department you apply to

Note: Two copies of all application materials above are required, one original and one duplicate. Please hand in personally or sent them by post to International Students Division of Peking University (The envelope must be marked ‘Application for Graduate Admission’). All the application materials would not be returned.

Application Fee: 800 RMB in cash or by Yinlian bank card. Any other currency or travel check would not be accepted. The application fee is not refundable.

Please note that incomplete application materials or application without application fee will not be processed.

 

Application Period: April 25, 2008 to June 20, 2008. Please make sure mailed materials arrive before the deadline.

Interview: Once proved qualified, the application materials will be sent to the department or faculty where you wish to study. They will consider your application and contact the qualified students to attend the interview before June 27, 2008.

 

Admission: The final Admission result will be published in mid-July 2008 at http://www.oir.pku.edu.cn. The Letter of Admission will be sent out in late July 2008.

 

Registration Period: September 2008 (specified in the Letter of Admission)

 

Funding:

a)       Tuition fee

b)       Accommodation (bedroom shared by two students)

c)       Fee for outpatient medical service, Comprehensive Medical Insurance and Benefit Plan for International Students in China

d)       Monthly living allowance (1,400 RMB for PhD candidates)

e)       A one-off settlement subsidy after registration (600 RMB)

2.      Beijing Government Scholarship covering tuition fee
